A short study of a few Greek words and Col. 2:16 ...Sabbath days, not weeks

Col.2 [16] Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days:

σαββάτων

Gill is wrong in Col. 2:16, when he says - they should not regard or submit to any man's judgment, as to the observance of the ceremonial law - very wrong interpretation.  This sounds like the churches when they say, "don't judge me brother". Again very wrong interpretation!

Sabbath

All variants of the word sabbaton, σάββατον in Greek have to do with the word Sabbath, not the word week.

G4521 - σάββατον - sabbaton - sab'-bat-on - Of Hebrew origin [H7676]; the Sabbath (that is, Shabbath), or day of weekly repose from secular avocations (also the observance or institution itself)

H7676 - ùÑáÌú shabbâth - shab-bawth' - Intensive from H7673; intermission, that is, (specifically) the Sabbath

H7673 - ùÑáú- shâbath - shaw-bath' - A primitive root; to repose, that is, desist from exertion; used in many implied relations (causatively, figuratively or specifically): - (cause to, let, make to) cease, celebrate, cause (make) to fail, keep (Sabbath), suffer to be lacking, leave, put away (down), (make to) rest, rid, still, take away.

Sabbath days (σαββάτων) - the plural being used for the singular. See on Luk_4:31; see on Acts 20:7. The plural is only once used in the New Testament of more than a single day (Act_17:2). The same enumeration of sacred seasons occur 1Ch_23:31; 2Ch_2:4; 2Ch_31:3; Eze_45:17; Hos_2:11.

The word week never appears in Luke 18:12 more like, (before the sabbath)

-------------------

Luke.24 [1] Now upon the first μιᾶς day (after the sabbath) of the week,

σαββάτων very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

-------------------

John.20 [1] The first μιᾶς day (after the sabbath)of the week σαββάτων cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

[19] Then the same day at evening, being the first μιᾶς day (after the sabbath) of the week, σαββάτων when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

-------------------
