Today’s topic:

Protocol, order in the congregation

Protocol: The official procedure or system of rules governing any office, group or situation - official dignity

As we read the TaNakh, we observe order and structure that God gave to His people, the Israelites, in commandments.

Even the universe has order and design.

Many years after the TaNaK, a Jewish man named Saul has an encounter with Yeshua on his way to Damascus.  - Acts 9 and 22

Saul is now sent to the Gentiles, nations.

Acts.26 [17] Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, [18] To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them (Israel)  which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

Paul becomes a dauntless preacher of righteousness and truth.

We see rules and regulations in many congregations from the letters.

Most of the letters are to Gentiles that came to a torah mindset.

These congregations did not know scripture and had to learn from scratch.

They needed many rules and regulations in their congregations to maintain order.

Paul needed organization so chaos would not abound.

The letters are just a small view from the past of some of the obstacles and situations that needed to be addressed by Saul.

So remember, Saul a Jew named Paul by the Greeks, had much work to do  with the Gentiles (nations) to bring them into holiness.

Saul instills his judgment from a Torah mindset

1 Cor.7 [25] Now concerning virgins I have no commandment of Yehovah: yet I give my judgment, as one that hath obtained mercy of the Lord to be faithful.

**Later in his letter he says:

[40] But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment: and I think also that I have the Spirit of God.

**Again:

 2 Cor.8 [10] And herein I give my advice

Saul wanted his instructions to be read to other congregations (if same situation occurred)

Col.4 [16] And when this epistle, letter is read among you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and that ye likewise read the epistle, letter from Laodicea.

 We have no letters from Laodicea.

However Yeshua has some words for the church of the Laodiceans:

Rev.3 [14] And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write;

These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;

[15] I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
[16] So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
[17] Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
[18] I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
[19] As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Words from God to the seven churches that were in Asia Minor (all gone today)

Rev.1 [11] Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia;

unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

We only have one letter from Saul to the Ephesians

We do not have any letters from Saul to Smyrna, Pergamos, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.

**Remember, all the gentile churches had different situations

Above, Saul wanted his letter to the Colossians to be read to the Laodiceans. Col. 4 [16]

Let’s read the letters, epistles with this mindset:

A letter to Timothy from Saul

There are 2 letters from Saul

However no letters from Timothy to Saul

1Tim. 5

[1] Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father;

and the younger men as brethren;

[2] The elder women as mothers;

the younger as sisters, with all purity.

Widows

[3] Honor widows that are widows indeed.

[4] But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

[5] Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusts in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

[6] But she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

[7] And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

[8] But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

[9] Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old (60) , having been the wife of one man,[10] Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

[11] But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Messiah, they will marry;[12] Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

[13] And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

[14] I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.
[15] For some are already turned aside after Satan.
[16] If any man or woman that believes have widows, let them relieve (take care) them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

The elders

[17] Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.
[18] For the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn. And, the laborer is worthy of his reward.

[19] Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

[20] Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

1Tim.2

[9] In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;
[10] But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

[11] Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

[12] But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
[13] For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
[14] And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
[15] Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

A bishop

1Tim.3

[1] This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desires a good work.
[2] A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
[3] Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
[4] One that rules well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
[5] (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
[6] Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
[7] Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

The deacons -  teacher, attendant

[8] Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
[9] Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
[10] And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
[11] Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

[12] Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
[13] For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Messiah Yeshua.

[14] These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
[15] But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
[16] And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

A letter to Titus from Saul, only one letter

However no letters from Titus to Saul

Tit.1

[1] Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Yeshua the Messiah, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
[2] In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
[3] But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
[4] To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Yeshua the Messiah our Savior.

Ordain elders

[5] For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
[6] If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

A bishop – an officer generally in charge, superintendent, overseer

[7] For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
[8] But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
[9] Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Tit. 2

[1] But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
[2] That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.
[3] The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
[4] That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
[5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Young men

[6] Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded.

[7] In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,
[8] Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.
[9] Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again;
[10] Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

[11] For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
[12] Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
[13] Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Yeshua the Messiah;
[14] Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
[15] These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee

Call for the elders

James 5[14] Is any sick among you? Let him call for the elders of the church;

and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
[15] And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.

[16] Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

[17] Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.
[18] And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

[19] Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him;
[20] Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

The elders

1Pet.5

[1] The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Messiah, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:

[2] Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
[3] Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.

[4] And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.

****[5] Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder.

Also younger in the Lord

Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

[6] Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:[7] Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

[8] Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
[9] Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
[10] But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Messiah Yeshua, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
[11] To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Yeshua’s instruction

Matt. 18

1 - [15] Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

2 - [16] But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

3 - [17] And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: (the Elders)

4 - but if he neglect to hear the church, (the Elders)

 let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. (kick them out)

Eph.4 [11] And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

1 Cor.7 [1] Now concerning the things whereof you wrote unto me

Things set in order

Tit.1 [5] For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, (lacking) and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:

In closing:

Sad to say, all these churches are gone today. We are left with a sampling of what took place almost 1900 years ago.

Time just about erased all the churches in Asia Minor, however time did not totally erase what happened at that time.

Some good advice:

1Cor.14 [40] Let all things be done decently and in order.

We are continuing the Apostles mission to the world.

I hope and pray you understand we also need order in our congregation lest chaos will prevail among us.
