10th month - Teveth èÅáÅú
19th day
Esth.2 [16] So
Esther was taken unto king Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month Tebeth, in the
seventh year of his reign.
-----------------
Question:
Why are we here today?
Answer:
We were told to remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy
----------
The 4th Commandment is a part of the covenant given to us
at Mount Sinai in the 3rd month, Sivan
Ex. 20 [8] Remember
the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
[9] Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy
work:
[10] But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the
LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy
daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger
that is within thy gates:
[11] For in six days the LORD made heaven and
earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore
the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.

A few things that may happen when you are in captivity
---------------------
You may be
brought to another land:
2 Kgs. 24 [15] And he carried away Jehoiachin to
Babylon, and the king's mother, and the king's wives, and his officers, and the
mighty of the land, those carried he into captivity
from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Daniel - judge or judgment of God
The one in charge always selects the best , strongest of captives
for his or her bidding:
Dan. 1
[3] And the king
spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of
the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;
[4] Children in whom was no blemish, but well
favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and
understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in
the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the
Chaldeans.
---------------------
Food may be changed:
[5]
And the king appointed them a daily provision of the
king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them
three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
---------------------
Names may be changed:
Dan. 1 [6] Now among these were of the children
of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
[7] Unto whom
the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of
Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.

You may be commanded to worship another god:
Dan. 3
[1]
Nebuchadnezzar the king made an image of gold, whose height was threescore
cubits, and the breadth thereof six cubits: he set it up in the plain of Dura,
in the province of Babylon.
[2] Then Nebuchadnezzar the king sent to gather together the princes, the
governors, and the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the counsellers, the
sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces, to come to the dedication of the
image which Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
[3] Then the princes, the governors, and captains, the judges, the
treasurers, the counsellers, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of the provinces,
were gathered together unto the dedication of the image that Nebuchadnezzar the
king had set up; and they stood before the image that Nebuchadnezzar had set up.
[4] Then an herald cried aloud, To you it is commanded, O people,
nations, and languages,
[5] That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp,
sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship
the golden image that Nebuchadnezzar the king hath set up:
[6] And whoso falleth not down and
worshippeth shall the same hour be cast into the midst of a burning fiery
furnace.
[7] Therefore at that time, when all the people heard the sound of the
cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, and all kinds of musick, all the
people, the nations, and the languages, fell down and worshipped the golden
image that Nebuchadnezzar the king had set up.
---------------------
You will be accused because you do not serve your captor's god:
[8]
Wherefore at that time certain Chaldeans came near, and accused the Jews.
[12]
There are certain Jews whom thou hast set over the affairs of the province of
Babylon, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego; these men, O king, have not regarded
thee: they serve not thy gods, nor worship the
golden image which thou hast set up.
You
may be threatened with death
[15]
Now if ye be ready that at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute,
harp, sackbut, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down
and worship the image which I have made; well: but if ye worship not, ye shall
be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is
that God that shall deliver you out of my hands?
[16] Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego, answered and said to the king, O
Nebuchadnezzar, we are not careful to answer thee in this matter.
[17] If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the
burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king.
[18] But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve
thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
---------------------
You will be accused because of you belief:
Dan.

[5]
Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.
---------------------
You may have time to study and find out how long your captivity
will last:
Dan.
9
[2]
In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the
years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would
accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
---------------------
You better confess, pray and seek God:
[3] And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and
supplication, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
[4]
And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my
confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping
the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his
commandments;
[5] We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly,
and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
[6] Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which
spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the
people of the land.
[7] O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of
faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of
Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through
all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that
they have trespassed against thee.
[8] O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our
princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
[9] To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have
rebelled against him;
[10] Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in
his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
[11] Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that
they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the
oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have
sinned against him.
[12] And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and
against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under
the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
[13] As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon
us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from
our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
[14] Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon
us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we
obeyed not his voice.
[15] And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of
the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this
day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
[16] O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let
thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy
mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers,
Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
[17] Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his
supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate,
for the Lord's sake.
[18] O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold
our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not
present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy
great mercies.
[19] O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not,
for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy
name.
[20] And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and
the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my
God for the holy mountain of my God;
---------------------
Your city may be set on fire and destroyed:
2 Kgs. 24 [1] In his days Nebuchadnezzar king
of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years: then he
turned and rebelled against him.
[10] At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar
king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
[11] And Nebuchadnezzar king of
Babylon came against the city, and his servants did besiege it.
2 Kgs. 25 [1] And it came to pass in the ninth year
of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all
his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts
against it round about.
[8] And in the fifth month, on the seventh
day of the month, which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king
of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, a servant of the
king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem:
[9]
And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king's
house, and all the houses of Jerusalem, and every great man's house burnt he
with fire.
[10] And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the
captain of the guard, brake down the walls of
Jerusalem round about.
---------------------
You may be cast him into a dungeon:
Jer. 38 [6] Then took
they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the son of
Hammelech, that was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with
cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but
mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the mire.
Lam. 3 [53] They have cut off my life in the
dungeon, and cast a stone upon me.
[55] I called upon
thy name, O LORD, out of the low dungeon.
---------------------
You may forsake God in your captivity:
Judg. 18 [30] And the
children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the
son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day
of the captivity of the land
---------------------
Thus saith the
Lord GOD;
Repent, and turn
yourselves from your idols;
and turn away your faces from all your
abominations.
Ezek. 14
[1] Then came
certain of the elders of Israel unto me, and sat before me.
[2] And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
[3] Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and
put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be
inquired of at all by them?
[4] Therefore speak unto them, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord
GOD; Every man of the house of Israel that setteth up his idols in his heart,
and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to
the prophet; I the LORD will answer him that cometh according to the multitude
of his idols;
[5] That I may take the house of Israel in their own heart, because they
are all estranged from me through their idols.
[6] Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all
your abominations.
[7] For every one of the house of Israel, or of the stranger that
sojourneth in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and setteth up his
idols in his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his
face, and cometh to a prophet to inquire of him concerning me; I the LORD will
answer him by myself:
[8] And I will set my face against that man, and will make him a sign
and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of my people; and ye shall
know that I am the LORD.
[9] And if the prophet be deceived when he hath spoken a thing, I the
LORD have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand upon him, and
will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
[10] And they shall bear the punishment of their iniquity: the
punishment of the prophet shall be even as the punishment of him that seeketh
unto him;
[11] That the house of Israel may go no more astray from me, neither be
polluted any more with all their transgressions; but that they may be my
people, and I may be their God, saith the Lord GOD.
[12] The word of the LORD came again to me, saying,
[13] Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by trespassing
grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff
of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and
beast from it:
[14] Though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job,
were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness,
saith the Lord GOD.
[15] If I cause noisome beasts to pass through the land, and they spoil it, so
that it be desolate, that no man may pass through because of the beasts:
[16] Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord
GOD, they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters; they only shall be
delivered, but the land shall be desolate.
[17] Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say, Sword, go through
the land; so that I cut off man and beast from it:
[18] Though these three men were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD,
they shall deliver neither sons nor daughters, but they only shall be delivered
themselves.
[19] Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury upon
it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast:
[20] Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in
it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son
nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
[21] For thus saith the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore
judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and
the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?
[22] Yet, behold, therein shall be left a remnant that shall be brought
forth, both sons and daughters: behold, they shall come forth unto you, and ye
shall see their way and their doings: and ye shall be comforted concerning the
evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, even concerning all that I have
brought upon it.
[23] And they shall comfort you, when ye see their ways and their
doings: and ye shall know that I have not done without cause all that I have
done in it, saith the Lord GOD.

a snare unto thee. As you can see, this IS what is happening.

Lev.
25 [1]
And the LORD spake unto Moses in mount Sinai, saying, [23] The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine;
for ye are strangers and sojourners with me.
Num. 33 [55] But if ye will not "drive out" the inhabitants of the land
from before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them
shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in
the land wherein ye dwell.
DRIVE THEM OUT
Exod. 23 [28] And I will send hornets before
thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from
before thee.
[29]
I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become
desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee.
[30]
By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be
increased, and inherit the land.
[31]
And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the
Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the
inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before
thee.
[32]
Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods.
[33] They shall not dwell in thy land,
lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will
surely be a snare unto thee.
DRIVE THEM OUT
Exod.

[10]
And he said, Behold, I make a covenant: before all thy people I will do
marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, nor in any nation: and
all the people among which thou art shall see the work of the LORD: for it is a
terrible thing that I will do with thee.
[11]
Observe thou that which I command thee this day: behold, I drive out before
thee the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and
the Hivite, and the Jebusite.
[12] Take heed to thyself, lest thou make a covenant with the
inhabitants of the land whither thou goest, lest it be for a snare in the midst
of thee:
[13] But ye shall destroy
their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
[14]
For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a
jealous God:
[15]
Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a
whoring after their gods , and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee,
and thou eat of his sacrifice;
[16]
And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a
whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
DRIVE THEM OUT
Num. 33 [52] Then ye shall drive out all the
inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their pictures, and
destroy all their molten images, and quite pluck down all their high places:
[53]
And ye shall dispossess the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein: for
I have given you the land to possess it.
[54]
And ye shall divide the land by lot for an inheritance among your families: and
to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer ye shall give
the less inheritance: every man's inheritance shall be in the place where his
lot falleth; according to the tribes of your fathers ye shall inherit
[55] But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from
before you; then it shall come to pass, that those which ye let remain of them
shall be pricks in your eyes, and thorns in your sides, and shall vex you in
the land wherein ye dwell.
[56]
Moreover it shall come to pass, that I shall do unto you, as I thought to do
unto them.
DRIVE THEM OUT
Josh.
23 [1]
And it came to pass a long time after that the LORD had given rest unto Israel
from all their enemies round about, that Joshua waxed old and stricken in age.[2]
And Joshua called for all Israel, and for their elders, and for their heads,
and for their judges, and for their officers, and said unto them, I am old and
stricken in age:[3] And ye have seen all that the LORD your God hath
done unto all these nations because of you; for the LORD your God is he that
hath fought for you.[4] Behold, I have divided unto you by lot these
nations that remain, to be an inheritance for your tribes, from Jordan, with
all the nations that I have cut off, even unto the great sea westward.
[5]
And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from before you, and drive
them from out of your sight; and ye shall possess their land, as the LORD
your God hath promised unto you.[6] Be ye therefore very courageous to
keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, that ye
turn not aside therefrom to the right hand or to the left;[7] That ye come
not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of
the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow
yourselves unto them:[8] But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye
have done unto this day.[9] For the LORD hath driven out from before
you great nations and strong: but as for you, no man hath been able to
stand before you unto this day.
[10] One man of you shall chase a
thousand: for the LORD your God, he it is that fighteth for you, as he hath
promised you.[11] Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love
the LORD your God.[12] Else if ye do in any wise go back, and cleave
unto the remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall
make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:[13] Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more
drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye
perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
DRIVE THEM OUT
Judg.
2 [1]
And an angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said, I made
you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware
unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you.[2]
And ye shall make no league with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall
throw down their altars: but ye have not obeyed my voice: why have ye done
this?[3] Wherefore I also said, I will
not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides,
and their gods shall be a snare unto you.
[4]
And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the
children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
[5] And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed
there unto the LORD.[6] And when Joshua had let the people go, the
children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land.
[7]
And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the
elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the LORD, that
he did for Israel.
[8]
And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and
ten years old.
[9] And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in
Timnath-heres, in the mount of Ephraim, on the north side of the hill Gaash.
[10] And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and
there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the
works which he had done for Israel.
[11]
And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served
Baalim:[12] And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them
out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people
that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the
LORD to anger.[13] And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and Ashtaroth.
[14]
And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he delivered them into
the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of
their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their
enemies.
[15] Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against
them for evil, as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn unto them:
and they were greatly distressed.
[16] Nevertheless the LORD raised up judges, which delivered them out of
the hand of those that spoiled them.
[17] And yet they would not hearken unto their
judges, but they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves unto
them: they turned quickly out of the way which their fathers walked in, obeying
the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so.
[18]
And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and
delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for
it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that
oppressed them and vexed them.
[19] And it came to pass, when the judge was
dead, that they returned, and corrupted themselves more than their fathers, in
following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not
from their own doings, nor from their stubborn way.
[20] And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel;
and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I
commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;[21] I also will
not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left
when he died:
[22]
That through them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the
LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not.
[23] Therefore the LORD left those nations, without driving them out
hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.

What does
Scripture say about what Israel should have done?
DRIVE THEM OUT - DRIVE THEM OUT - DRIVE THEM OUT - DRIVE THEM OUT
Deut.
7
[1] When the LORD thy God
shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and
hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites,
and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and
the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;
[2]
And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite
them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew
mercy unto them:
[3]
Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give
unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
[4]
For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other
gods: so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and destroy thee
suddenly.
[5]
But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down
their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with
fire.
[6]
For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen
thee to be a special people unto himself, above all people that are upon the
face of the earth.
[7]
The LORD did not set his love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in
number than any people; for ye were the fewest of all people:[8] But because
the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto
your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed
you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.[9]
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which
keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to
a thousand generations;[10] And repayeth them that hate him to their face, to
destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth him, he will repay him to
his face.

4 [1]
Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments,
which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the
land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you.
[2]
Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish
ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I
command you.
[3] Your eyes have seen what the LORD did because of Baal-peor: for all
the men that followed Baal-peor, the LORD thy God hath destroyed them from
among you.
[4] But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of
you this day.
[5] Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the LORD
my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess
it.
[6] Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your
understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes,
and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.
[7] For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them,
as the LORD our God is in all things that we call upon him for?
[8] And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments
so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day?
[9]
Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the
things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the
days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
[10] Specially the day that thou stoodest before the LORD thy God in
Horeb, when the LORD said unto me, Gather me the people together, and I will
make them hear my words, that they may learn to fear me all the days that they
shall live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children.
[11] And ye came near and stood under the mountain; and the mountain
burned with fire unto the midst of heaven, with darkness, clouds, and thick
darkness.
[12]
And the LORD spake unto you out of the midst of the fire: ye heard the voice of
the words, but saw no similitude; only ye heard a voice.
[13] And he declared unto you his covenant, which he commanded you to
perform, even ten commandments; and he wrote them upon two tables of stone.
[14] And the LORD commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and
judgments, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it.
[15] Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner
of similitude on the day that the LORD spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst
of the fire:
[16] Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the
similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female,
[17] The likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any
winged fowl that flieth in the air,
[18] The likeness of any thing that creepeth on the ground, the likeness
of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth:
[19] And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest
the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be
driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided
unto all nations under the whole heaven.
[20] But the LORD hath taken you, and brought you forth out of the iron
furnace, even out of Egypt, to be unto him a people of inheritance, as ye are
this day.
[21] Furthermore the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, and sware
that I should not go over Jordan, and that I should not go in unto that good
land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance:
[22] But I must die in this land, I must not go over Jordan: but ye
shall go over, and possess that good land.
[23] Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD
your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness
of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee.
[24] For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.
[25] When thou shalt beget children, and children's children, and ye
shall have remained long in the land, and shall corrupt yourselves, and make a
graven image, or the likeness of any thing, and shall do evil in the sight of
the LORD thy God, to provoke him to anger:
[26] I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that ye
shall soon utterly perish from off the land whereunto ye go over Jordan to possess
it; ye shall not prolong your days upon it, but shall utterly be destroyed.
[27] And the LORD shall scatter you among the nations, and ye shall be
left few in number among the heathen, whither the LORD shall lead you.
[28] And there ye shall serve gods, the work of men's hands, wood and
stone, which neither see, nor hear, nor eat, nor smell.
[29] But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt
find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
[30] When thou art in tribulation, and all these things are come upon
thee, even in the latter days, if thou turn to the LORD thy God, and shalt be
obedient unto his voice;
[31] (For the LORD thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee,
neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware
unto them.
[32] For ask now of the days that are past, which were before thee,
since the day that God created man upon the earth, and ask from the one side of
heaven unto the other, whether there hath been any such thing as this great
thing is, or hath been heard like it?
[33] Did ever people hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of
the fire, as thou hast heard, and live?
[34] Or hath God assayed to go and take him a nation from the midst of
another nation, by temptations, by signs, and by wonders, and by war, and by a
mighty hand, and by a stretched out arm, and by great terrors, according to all
that the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
[35] Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he
is God; there is none else beside him.
[36] Out of heaven he made thee to hear his voice, that he might
instruct thee: and upon earth he shewed thee his great fire; and thou heardest
his words out of the midst of the fire.
[37] And because he loved thy fathers, therefore he chose their seed
after them, and brought thee out in his sight with his mighty power out of
Egypt;
[38] To drive out nations from before thee greater and mightier than
thou art, to bring thee in, to give thee their land for an inheritance, as it
is this day.
[39] Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the
LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
[40] Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which
I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children
after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the
LORD thy God giveth thee, for ever.

Deut.9[3] Understand therefore this day, that
the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he
shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt
thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee.
[4] Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath
cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath
brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the
LORD doth drive them out from before thee. [5] Not for thy
righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess
their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth
drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the
LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

DRIVE THEM OUT
Josh. 24 [1] And Joshua gathered all the tribes of
Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, and for their heads,
and for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves
before God.[2] And Joshua said unto all the people, Thus saith the LORD
God of Israel, Your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old
time, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nachor: and they
served other gods.
[3] And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and
led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave
him Isaac.
[4] And I gave unto Isaac Jacob and Esau: and I gave unto Esau mount
Seir, to possess it; but Jacob and his children went down into Egypt.
[5] I sent Moses also and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that
which I did among them: and afterward I brought you out.
[6] And I brought your fathers out of Egypt: and ye came unto the sea;
and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and horsemen unto
the Red sea.
[7] And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and
the Egyptians, and brought the sea upon them, and covered them; and your eyes
have seen what I have done in Egypt: and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long
season.
[8] And I brought you into the land of the Amorites, which dwelt on the
other side Jordan; and they fought with you: and I gave them into your hand,
that ye might possess their land; and I destroyed them from before you.
[9] Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and warred against
Israel, and sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you:
[10] But I would not hearken unto Balaam; therefore he blessed you
still: so I delivered you out of his hand.
[11] And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of
Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the
Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the
Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.
[12] And I sent the hornet before you, which drave them out from before
you, even the two kings of the Amorites; but not with thy sword, nor with thy
bow.
[13] And I have given you a land for which ye did not labour, and cities
which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which
ye planted not do ye eat.[14] Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him
in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers
served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the
LORD. [15] And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD,
choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your
fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of
the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve
the LORD.[16] And the people answered and said, God forbid that we
should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;
[17] For the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers
out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great
signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among
all the people through whom we passed:
[18] And the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the
Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he
is our God.
[19] And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he
is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions
nor your sins.
[20] If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn
and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good.
[21] And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD.
[22] And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against
yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We
are witnesses.
[23] Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among
you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel.
[24] And the people said unto Joshua, The LORD our God will we serve,
and his voice will we obey.
[25] So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and set them a
statute and an ordinance in Shechem.
[26] And Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God, and
took a great stone, and set it up there under an oak, that was by the sanctuary
of the LORD.
[27] And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a
witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake
unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.
[28] So Joshua let the people depart, every man unto his inheritance.
[29] And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun,
the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old.
[30] And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in
Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of
Gaash.
[31] And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of
the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the
LORD, that he had done for Israel.
[32] And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought
up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob
bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of
silver: and it became the inheritance of the children of Joseph.
[33] And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill
that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim.

Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass,
[21]
And the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites that
inhabited Jerusalem; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in
Jerusalem unto this day.[22] And the house of Joseph, they also went up
against Bethel: and the LORD was with them.[23] And the house of Joseph
sent to descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was Luz.)[24]
And the spies saw a man come forth out of the city, and they said unto him, Shew
us, we pray thee, the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.[25]
And when he shewed them the entrance into the city, they smote the city with
the edge of the sword; but they let go the man and all his family.[26] And the
man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name
thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.

Neither did Manasseh drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shean and her towns, nor
Taanach and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Dor and her towns, nor the
inhabitants of Ibleam and her towns, nor the inhabitants of Megiddo and her
towns: but the Canaanites would dwell in that land.[28] And it came to pass,
when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not
utterly drive them out.
[29]
Neither did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites that dwelt in Gezer; but the
Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them.[30] Neither did Zebulun drive out the
inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites dwelt
among them, and became tributaries.
[31] Neither did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Accho, nor the inhabitants
of Zidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of
Rehob:[32] But the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the
land: for they did not drive them out.
[33]
Neither did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh, nor the
inhabitants of Beth-anath; but he dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants
of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh and of Beth-anath
became tributaries unto them.
[34]
And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountain: for they would
not suffer them to come down to the valley:[35] But the Amorites would dwell in
mount Heres in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph
prevailed, so that they became tributaries.[36] And the coast of the Amorites
was from the going up to Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as

Namely, five lords of the Philistines, and all the Canaanites, and the
Sidonians, and the Hivites that dwelt in mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-hermon
