The 4th Commandment
The Sabbath is a part of the covenant given to us at Mount Sinai.
Exod. 20
[8] Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
[9] Six days shalt thou labour,
and do all thy work:
[10] But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD
thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor
thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle,
nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
[11] For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in
them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

selfsame day, that it may be an holy convocation unto
you: ye shall do no servile work therein: it shall be a statute for ever in all your dwellings throughout your generations.

Before we leave Deuteronomy,
in our torah portions next week, I thought I would do a short recapitulation of the Lord saying,
"I command thee, you"

Yeshua said:
John 14 [15] If ye love me, keep my commandments.
John 15
[1] I am the true vine, and my Father is
the husbandman.
[2] Every branch in me that beareth not fruit
he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it,
that it may bring forth more fruit.
[3] Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
[4] Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of
itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
[5] I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth
in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much
fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
[6] If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth

that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

[18] If the world hate
you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
[19] If ye were of the world, the world would love his
own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of
the world, therefore the world hateth you.
[20] Remember the word that I said unto you,
The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will
also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
[21] But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake,
because they know not him that sent me.
[22] If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but
now they have no cloke for their sin.
[23] He that hateth me hateth
my Father also.
[24] If I had not done among them the works which none other man did,
they had not had sin: but now have they both seen and hated both me and my
Father.
[25] But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is
written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
[26] But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the
Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth
from the Father, he shall testify of me:
[27] And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from
the beginning.

Deut. 4

none else.

Deut. 7
[9] Know therefore that the LORD thy God,
he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant
and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand

face, to destroy them: he will not be slack to him that hateth
him, he will repay him to his face.
[11] Thou shalt therefore keep the
commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which I command thee
this day, to do them.
[12] Wherefore it shall come to pass, if ye hearken to these judgments,
and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep unto thee the covenant
and the mercy which he sware unto thy fathers:
[13] And he will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee: he will
also bless the fruit of thy womb, and the fruit of thy land, thy corn, and thy
wine, and thine oil, the increase of thy kine, and the flocks of thy sheep, in the land which he sware unto thy fathers to give thee.
[14] Thou shalt be blessed above all people:
there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.
[15] And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put
none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou knowest,
upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that hate

which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye

serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.
Deut. 8
[1] All the commandments which I
command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and
multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware
unto your fathers.
[2] And thou shalt remember all the way which
the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee,
and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart,
whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
[3] And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with
manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy
fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread
only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the
mouth of the LORD doth man live.
[4] Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell,
these forty years.
[5] Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth
his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
[6] Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments

[7] For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a
good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out
of valleys and hills;
[8] A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and
pomegranates; a land of oil olive, and honey;
[9] A land wherein thou shalt eat bread
without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in
it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass.
[10] When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt
bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee.
[11] Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his
commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee
this day:
[12] Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly
houses, and dwelt therein;
[13] And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy
gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;
[14] Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou
forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt,
from the house of bondage;
[15] Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein
were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who
brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;
[16] Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew
not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good
at thy latter end;
[17] And thou say in thine heart, My power and
the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.
[18] But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God:
for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
[19] And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and
walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you
this day that ye shall surely perish.
[20] As the nations which the LORD destroyeth
before your face, so shall ye perish; because ye would not be obedient unto the
voice of the LORD your God.

[12] And now, Israel, what doth the LORD
thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways,
and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all

[13] To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I
command thee this day for thy good?
[14] Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD's thy God,
the earth also, with all that therein is.
[15] Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he
chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.
[16] Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.
[17] For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great
God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not
persons, nor taketh reward:
[18] He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
[19] Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land
of Egypt.
[20] Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt
thou cleave, and swear by his name.
[21] He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these
great and terrible things, which thine eyes have

love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments,
and his commandments, alway.

your children which have not known, and which have not seen the chastisement of
the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,
[3] And his miracles, and his acts, which he did in the midst of Egypt
unto Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and unto all his land;
[4] And what he did unto the army of Egypt, unto their horses, and to
their chariots; how he made the water of the Red sea to overflow them as they
pursued after you, and how the LORD hath destroyed them unto this day;
[5] And what he did unto you in the wilderness, until ye came into this
place;
[6] And what he did unto Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the
son of Reuben: how the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed them up, and their
households, and their tents, and all the substance that was in their
possession, in the midst of all Israel:
[7] But your eyes have seen all the great acts of the LORD which he did.
[8] Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you
this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go
to possess it;
[9] And that ye may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed,
a land that floweth with milk and honey.
[10] For the land, whither thou goest in to
possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou sowedst thy seed, and wateredst
it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs:
[11] But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and
valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:
[12] A land which the LORD thy God careth for:
the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year
even unto the end of the year.
[13] And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my
commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God,
and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,
[14] That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the
first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest
gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.
[15] And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.
[16] Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye
turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;
[17] And then the LORD's wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up
the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and
lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.
[18] Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your
soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets
between your eyes.
[19] And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when
thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest
up.
[20] And thou shalt write them upon the door
posts of thine house, and upon thy gates:
[21] That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in
the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to
give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth.
[22] For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I
command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his
ways, and to cleave unto him;
[23] Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and
ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves.
[24] Every place whereon the soles of your
feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the
river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be.
[25] There shall no man be able to stand before you: for the LORD your
God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye
shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you.
[26] Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse;
[27] A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which
I command you this day:
[28] And a curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your
God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go
after other gods, which ye have not known.
[29] And it shall come to pass, when the LORD
thy God hath brought thee in unto the land whither thou goest
to possess it, that thou shalt put the blessing upon
mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.
[30] Are they not on the other side Jordan, by the way where the sun goeth down, in the land of the Canaanites, which dwell in
the champaign over against Gilgal,
beside the plains of Moreh?
[31] For ye shall pass over Jordan to go in to possess the land which
the LORD your God giveth you, and ye shall possess
it, and dwell therein.
[32] And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and judgments which I
set before you this day.

Deut. 12
[1] These
are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which
the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess
it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.
[11] Then
there shall be a place which the LORD your God shall choose to cause his name
to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your
burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your
hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD:
[14] But in
the place which the LORD shall choose in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt offerings, and there thou shalt do all that I command thee.
[28] Observe
and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with
thee, and with thy children after thee for ever, when
thou doest that which is good and right in the sight of the LORD thy God.
[32] What
thing soever I command you, observe to do it:
thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

[1] If there
arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth
thee a sign or a wonder,
[2] And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which
thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
[3] Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of
that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with
all your heart and with all your soul.
[4] Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his
commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
[5] And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death;
because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought
you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to
thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So
shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee.
[6] If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter,
or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine
own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which
thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;
[7] Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh
unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the
other end of the earth;
[8] Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor
hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him,
neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt
thou conceal him:
[9] But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and
afterwards the hand of all the people.
[10] And thou shalt stone him with stones,
that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God,
which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
[11] And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such
wickedness as this is among you.
[12] If thou shalt hear say in one of thy
cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying,
[13] Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you,
and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve
other gods, which ye have not known;
[14] Then shalt thou inquire, and make search,
and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that
such abomination is wrought among you;
[15] Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants
of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is
therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword.
[16] And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it
into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn
with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God:
and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be
built again.
[17] And there shall cleave nought of the
cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn
from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee
mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto
thy fathers;
[18] When thou shalt hearken to the voice of
the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this
day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God.

[1] At the
end of every seven years thou shalt make a release.
[2] And this is the manner of the release: Every creditor that lendeth ought unto his neighbour
shall release it;he shall
not exact it of his neighbour, or of his brother;
because it is called the LORD's release.
[3] Of a foreigner thou mayest exact it again:
but that which is thine with thy brother thine hand shall release;
[4] Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the LORD shall
greatly bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth
thee for an inheritance to possess it:
[5] Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God,
to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day.
[6] For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he
promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations,
but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations,but they shall not reign over thee.
[7] If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any
of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth
thee, thou shalt not harden thine
heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:
[8] But thou shalt open thine
hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him
sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth.
[9] Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The
seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine
eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest
him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee,
and it be sin unto thee.
[10] Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy
God shall bless thee in all thy works, and in all that
thou puttest thine hand
unto.
[11] For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I
command thee, saying, Thou shalt open thine hand wide unto thy brother, to thy poor, and to thy
needy, in thy land.
[12] And if
thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman , be
sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee.
[13] And when thou sendest him out free from
thee, thou shalt not let him go away empty:
[14] Thou shalt furnish him liberally out of
thy flock, and out of thy floor, and out of thy winepress: of that wherewith
the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give
unto him.
[15] And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God
redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing to day.
[16] And it shall be, if he say unto thee,
I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee
and thine house, because he is well with thee;
[17] Then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he
shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy
maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
[18] It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest
him away free from thee; for he hath been worth a
double hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God
shall bless thee in all that thou doest.

Deut. 19
[7] Wherefore
I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three
cities for thee.
[9] If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I
command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his
ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee,
beside these three:
[10] That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
[11] But if any man hate his neighbour, and
lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he
die, and fleeth into one of these cities:
[12] Then the elders of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and
deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.
[13] Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel,
that it may go well with thee.
[14] Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt
inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee
to possess it.
[15] One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or
for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth
of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be
established.
[16] If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him
that which is wrong;
[17] Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand
before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those
days;
[18] And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the
witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;
[19] Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his
brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among
you.
[20] And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth
commit no more any such evil among you.
[21] And thine eye shall not pity; but life
shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Deut. 24
[16] The
fathers shall not be put to death for the children,
neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be
put to death for his own sin.
[17] Thou shalt not pervert the judgment of
the stranger, nor of the fatherless; nor take a widow's raiment to pledge:
[18] But thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee
thence: therefore I command thee to do this thing.
[19] When
thou cuttest down thine
harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the
field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall
be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy
God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
[20] When thou beatest thine
olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again:
it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
[21] When thou gatherest the grapes of thy
vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall
be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow.
[22] And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command
thee to do this thing.

Moses with the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, Keep all the commandments which I command you this

Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these
stones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal,
and thou shalt plaister
them with plaister.
[10] Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do
his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.

[1] And it
shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently
unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments
which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on
high above all nations of the earth:
[13] And the
LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt
be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if that
thou hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee
this day, to observe and to do them:
[14] And
thou shalt not go aside from any of the words which
I command thee this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after
other gods to serve them.
[15] But it
shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy
God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee
this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee:

[1] And it shall come to pass, when all
these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set
before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among
all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee,
[2] And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt
obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and
thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy
soul;
[8] And thou
shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all
his commandments which I command thee this day.
[11] For
this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from
thee, neither is it far off.
[12] It is
not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go
up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
[13] Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest
say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it
unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
[14] But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy
heart, that thou mayest do it.
[15] See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and
evil;
[16] In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to
walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments,
that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy
God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest
to possess it.
[17] But if thine
heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt
be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
[18] I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that
ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest
over Jordan to go to possess it.
[19] I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have
set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life,
that both thou and thy seed may live:
[20] That thou mayest love the LORD thy God,
and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of
thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which
the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to
Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
John 15
[14] Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
