A Holy Convocation

מִקְרָא-קֹדֶשׁ

A Solemn Assembly - Rest

The last day, a Great day, a Holy Convocation, a Solemn Assembly

Lev.23

[34] Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, the fifteenth day of this seventh month shall be the feast of tabernacles for seven days unto Yehovah.

[35] On the first day shall be a holy convocation: you shall do no servile work therein.

[36] Seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yehovah:

(Today),

on the eighth day shall be an holy convocation unto you; and you shall offer an offering made by fire unto Yehovah:

it is a solemn assembly; and you shall do no servile work therein.

Solemn assembly:  עֲצֶרֶת

עֲצֶרֶת  עֲצָרָה  ‛ătsârâh   ‛ătsereth,  ats-aw-raw', ats-eh'-reth

An assembly, especially on a holy day (a meeting)

Lev. 23

[37] These are the feasts of Yehovah, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations,

to offer an offering made by fire unto Yehovah, a burnt offering, and a meat offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, everything upon his day:

[38]

Beside the Sabbaths of Yehovah,

and beside your gifts,

and beside all your vows,

and beside all your freewill offerings, which you give unto Yehovah.

**[39] Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruit of the land, you shall keep a feast unto Yehovah seven days:

**on the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the “eighth day” shall be a Sabbath.

[40] And you shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before Yehovah your God seven days.

[41] And you shall keep it a feast unto Yehovah seven days in the year.

It shall be a statute forever in your generations: you shall celebrate it in the seventh month.

[42] You shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths:

[43] That your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt:

I am Yehovah Your God.

[44] And Moses declared unto the children of Israel the feasts of Yehovah.

Ezra.3

[1] And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.

[2] Then stood up Joshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.

[3] And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings thereon unto Yehovah, even burnt offerings morning and evening.

[4] They kept also the feast of tabernacles, as it is written,

and offered the daily burnt offerings by number, according to the custom, as the duty of every day required;

[5] And afterward offered the continual burnt offering,

both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of Yehovah that were consecrated,

and of every one that willingly offered a freewill offering unto Yehovah.

[6] From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto Yehovah. But the foundation of the temple of Yehovah was not yet laid.

Neh.8

[14] And they found written in the law which Yehovah had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month:

[15] And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying,

Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written.

[16] So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.

[17] And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths:

for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so.

And there was very great gladness.

**[18] Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day,

he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and

on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.

2 Chr. 7

[8] Also at the same time Solomon kept the feast seven days, and all Israel with him, a very great congregation, from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of Egypt.

[9] And in the eighth day they made a solemn assembly:

for they kept the dedication of the altar seven days, and the feast seven days.

This was Solomon’s prayer during the Feast:

2Chr.6

[1] Then said Solomon, Yehovah had said that he would dwell in the thick darkness.

[2] But I have built a house of habitation for you, and a place for your dwelling for ever.

[3] And the king turned his face, and blessed the whole congregation of Israel: and all the congregation of Israel stood.

[4] And he said, Blessed be Yehovah God of Israel, who had with his hands fulfilled that which he spoke with his mouth to my father David, saying,
[5] Since the day that I brought forth my people out of the land of Egypt I chose no city among all the tribes of Israel to build an house in, that My Name might be there;

neither chose I any man to be a ruler over my people Israel:

[6] But I have chosen Jerusalem, that my name might be there; and have chosen David to be over my people Israel.

**[7] Now it was in the heart of David my father to build a house for the Name of Yehovah God of Israel.

[8] But Yehovah said to David my father, Forasmuch as it was in your heart to build a house for my name, you did well in that it was in your heart:

[9] Notwithstanding you shall not build the house; but your son which shall come forth out of your loins, he shall build the house for My name.

[10] Yehovah therefore had performed His word that He had spoken:

for I am risen up in the room of David my father, and am set on the throne of Israel, as Yehovah promised, and have built the house for the name of Yehovah God of Israel.

[11] And in it have I put the ark, wherein is the covenant of Yehovah, that he made with the children of Israel.

[12] And he stood before the altar of Yehovah in the presence of all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands:

[13] For Solomon had made a brasen scaffold, of five cubits long, and five cubits broad, and three cubits high, and had set it in the midst of the court: and upon it he stood, and kneeled down upon his knees before all the congregation of Israel, and spread forth his hands toward heaven,

[14] And said, O Yehovah God of Israel, there is no God like you in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keeps covenant, and shows mercy unto your servants, that walk before you with all their hearts:
[15] You which have kept with your servant David my father that which you have promised him; and spoke with your mouth, and have fulfilled it with your hand, as it is this day.

[16] Now therefore, O Yehovah God of Israel, keep with your servant David my father that which you have promised him, saying,

There shall not fail you a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that your children take heed to their way to walk in My law, as you have walked before Me.

[17] Now then, O Yehovah God of Israel, let your word be verified, which you have spoken unto your servant David.

[18] But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth?

Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You;

How much less this house which I have built!

[19]
Have respect therefore to the prayer of your servant, and to his supplication, O Yehovah my God, to hearken unto the cry and the prayer which your servant prays before you:

[20] That your eyes may be open upon this house day and night, upon the place whereof you have said that you would put your name there; to hearken unto the prayer which your servant prays toward this place.

[21]
Hearken therefore unto the supplications of your servant, and of your people Israel, which they shall make toward this place: hear from your dwelling place, even from heaven; and when you hear, forgive.

[22] If a man sin against his neighbor, and an oath be laid upon him to make him swear, and the oath come before your altar in this house;

**[23] Then hear from heaven, and do, and judge your servants, by requiting the wicked, by recompensing his way upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness.

[24] And if your people Israel be put to the worse before the enemy, because they have sinned against you; and shall return and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house;

**[25] Then hear from the heavens, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again unto the land which you gave to them and to their fathers.

[26] When the heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you;

yet if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when You  afflict them;

**[27] Then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you have taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon your land, which you have given unto your people for an inheritance.

[28]

If there be dearth in the land,

if there be pestilence,

if there be blasting, or mildew, locusts, or caterpillars; if their enemies besiege them in the cities of their land;

whatsoever sore or whatsoever sickness there be:

[29] Then what prayer or what supplication so ever shall be made of any man, or of all your people Israel, when every one shall know his own sore and his own grief, and shall spread forth his hands in this house:

**[30] Then hear from heaven your dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you only know the hearts of the children of men:)

[31] That they may fear You, to walk in Your Ways, so long as they live in the land which you gave unto our fathers.

[32] Moreover concerning the stranger, which is not of your people Israel, but is come from a far country for your great name's sake, and your mighty hand, and your stretched out arm; if they come and pray in this house;

**[33] Then hear from the heavens, even from Your dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calls to you for; that all people of the earth may know your name, and fear you, as does your people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by Your Name.

[34] If your people go out to war against their enemies by the way that you shall send them, and they pray unto you toward this city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for Your Name;

**[35] Then hear from the heavens their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause.

[36] If they sin against You, (for there is no man which sins not,) and you be angry with them, and deliver them over before their enemies, and they carry them away captives unto a land far off or near;

[37] Yet if they bethink themselves in the land whither they are carried captive, and turn and pray unto you in the land of their captivity, saying, We have sinned, we have done amiss, and have dealt wickedly;

[38] If they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, whither they have carried them captives, and pray toward their land, which you gave  unto their fathers, and toward the city which you have chosen, and toward the house which I have built for Your name:

**[39] Then hear from the heavens, even from Your dwelling place, their prayer and their supplications, and maintain their cause, and forgive your people which have sinned against You.

[40] Now, my God, let, I beseech you, let your eyes be open, and let your ears be attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.

[41] Now therefore arise, O Yehovah God, into Your resting place, You, and the ark of Your strength: let Your priests, O Yehovah God, be clothed with salvation, and let Your saints rejoice in goodness.

[42] O Yehovah God, turn not away the face of your anointed: remember the mercies of David your servant.

2Chr.7

[1] Now when Solomon had made an end of praying,

fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the Glory of Yehovah filled the house.

[2] And the priests could not enter into the house of Yehovah,

because the Glory of Yehovah had filled Yehovah's house.

[3] And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came down, and the Glory of Yehovah upon the house,

they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the pavement, and worshipped, and praised Yehovah, saying,

For He is good; for His mercy endures for ever.

John 7

[2] the feast of tabernacles is at hand

[14] Now about the midst of the feast Yeshua went up into the temple, and taught.

[37] In the last day, that great day of the feast, Yeshua stood and cried, saying,

If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.

[38] He that believeth on Me, as the scripture had said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.

[39] (But this spoke He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive: for the Holy Spirit was not yet given; because that Yeshua was not yet glorified.)

[2] Thus said Yehovah,

Learn not the way of the heathen,

and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

[3] For the customs of the people are vain:

for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

[4] They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers that it move not.
