 Shabbat Shalom

 Let’s Pray

Today is September 10, 2011

Latin september mensis "seventh month" (when the calendar was started in March)

September had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 30 days long.

---------------------

However we restore the calendar of God

We are now in the 6th Month called Elul, 10th day

No scripture says the 6th month is Elul

We did some study and came to this conclusion below.

Neh. 6 [15] So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. (Must 6th month)

Neh. 7 [73] So the priests, and the Levites, and the porters, and the singers, and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt in their cities; and when the seventh month came, the children of Israel were in their cities.

I am doing an in-depth study of the 10 Commandments in Scripture

I am counting from 10 down to 1

The last 7 studies were:

The 4th Commandment

Exod.20 [8] Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
[9] Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
[10] But the seventh day is the
sabbath of Yehovah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
[11] For in six days
Yehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Yehovah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

The 5th Commandment

Exod.20 [12] Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which Yehovah thy God giveth thee.

The 6th Commandment

Exod.20[13] Thou shalt not kill, murder

The 7th Commandment

Exod.20 [14] Thou shalt not commit adultery.

The 8th Commandment

Exod.20 [15] Thou shalt not steal.

Commandment 9

[16] Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. (Which takes in lying also.)

Commandment 10

[17] Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

I know I am not getting all the scriptures, however I feel that I am conveying to you the understanding of these commandments.

Today’s Topic: the 3rd Commandment

Invoking God’s name, or God Himself in vain

verb (used with object), -voked, -vok·ing.

1. to call for with earnest desire; make supplication or pray for: to invoke God's mercy.

2. to call on (a deity, Muse, etc.), as in prayer or supplication.

3. to declare to be binding or in effect: to invoke the law; to invoke a veto.

4. to appeal to, as for confirmation.

5. to petition or call on for help or aid.

Let’s start

The 3rd Commandment

Exod.20[7] Th ou shalt not take the name of Yehovah thy God in vain; for Yehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Deut.5 [11] Thou shalt not take the name of Yehovah thy God in vain: for Yehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Let’s define the word, take

H5375 ðñä    ðùÒà  nâśâ'  nâsâh naw-saw', naw-saw'

Let’s define the word vain

BDB Definition: 1) emptiness, vanity, falsehood, 1a) emptiness, nothingness, vanity, 1b) emptiness of speech, lying, 1c) worthlessness (of conduct)

H7722 ùÑàä    ùÑåàä    ùÑåà  shô'  shô'âh  shô'âh - sho, sho-aw', sho-aw'

From an unused root meaning to rush over; a tempest; by implication devastation: - desolate (-ion), destroy, destruction, storm, wasteness.

Pss.139 [19] Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God: depart from me therefore, ye bloody men.
[20] For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain.
[21] Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee?
[22] I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine enemies.

Prov.30 [1] The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, even the prophecy: the man spake unto Ithiel, even unto Ithiel and Ucal,
[2] Surely I am more brutish than any man, and have not the understanding of a man.
[3] I neither learned wisdom, nor have the knowledge of the holy.
[4] Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name, if thou canst tell?
[5] Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
[6] Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
[7] Two things have I required of thee; deny me them not before I die:
[8] Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
[9] Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is Yehovah? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

Isa.1 [10] Hear the word of Yehovah, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
[11] To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith Yehovah: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
[12] When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts?
[13] Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
[14] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them.
[15] And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

Isa.45 [18] For thus saith Yehovah that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am Yehovah; and there is none else. [19] I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I Yehovah speak righteousness, I declare things that are right

Mal.3[14] Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before Yehovah of hosts?

[15] And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered.
[16] Then they that feared Yehovah spake often one to another: and Yehovah hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared Yehovah, and that thought upon his name.
[17] And they shall be mine, saith Yehovah of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
[18] Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not.

Matt.6 [7] But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

[8] Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
[9] After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
[10] Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
[11] Give us this day our daily bread.
[12] And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
[13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
[14] For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
[15] But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Matt.15 [1] Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
[2] Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
[3] But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?
[4] For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
[5] But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
[6] And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
[7] Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
[8] This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
[9] But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

Mark.7 [1] Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
[2] And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
[3] For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
[4] And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
[5] Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
[6] He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
[7] Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctines the commandments of men.
[8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
[9] And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Rom.1 [21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

[22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
[23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
[24] Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
[25] Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
[26] For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
[27] And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
[28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
[29] Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
[30] Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
[31] Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
[32] Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Isa.29[13] Wherefore Yehovah said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Ezek.33 [31] And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.[32] And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.[33] And when this cometh to pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among them.

2Kgs.17 [23] … Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day.
[24] And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof.
[25] And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not Yehovah: therefore Yehovah sent lions among them, which slew some of them.
[26] Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land.
[27] Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
[28] Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear Yehovah.

[29] Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt.
[30] And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima,
[31] And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim.
[32] So they feared Yehovah, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places.

[33] They feared Yehovah (NOT), and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence.

[34] Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not Yehovah, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which Yehovah commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;
[35] With whom Yehovah had made a covenant, and charged them saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them:

[36] But Yehovah, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice.
[37] And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods.
[38] And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods.
[39] But Yehovah your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies.

[40] Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner.

[41] So these nations feared Yehovah (NOT), and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

That was VAIN

Let’s look up the word, profane

Lev.18[21] And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am Yehovah.

Lev.19[8] Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath profaned the hallowed thing of Yehovah: and that soul shall be cut off from among his people

[12] And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am Yehovah.

Lev.20[3] And I will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people; because he hath given of his seed unto Molech, to defile my sanctuary, and to profane my holy name.

Lev.21[6] They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of Yehovah made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

Lev.22[2] Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, and that they profane not my holy name in those things which they hallow unto me: I am Yehovah

[32] Neither shall ye profane my holy name; but I will be hallowed among the children of Israel: I am Yehovah which hallow you,

Ezek.36[20] And when they entered unto the heathen, whither they went, they profaned my holy name, when they said to them, These are the people of Yehovah, and are gone forth out of his land.

[21] But I had pity for mine holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the heathen, whither they went.

[22] Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord Yehovah; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.

[23] And I will sanctify my great name, which was profaned among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall know that I am Yehovah, saith the Lord Yehovah, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

Amos.2[6] Thus saith Yehovah; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
[7] That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
[8] And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
[9] Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
[10] Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
[11] And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith Yehovah.
[12] But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
[13] Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
[14] Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
[15] Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
[16] And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith Yehovah.

Mal.2 [11] Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of Yehovah which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.

Let’s look up the word, blasphemeth

Lev.24 [11] And the Israelitish woman's son blasphemed the name of Yehovah, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother's name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:)
[12] And they put him in ward, that the mind of Yehovah might be shewed them.
[13] And Yehovah spake unto Moses, saying,
[14] Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.
[15] And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.
[16] And he that blasphemeth the name of Yehovah, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of Yehovah, shall be put to death.

1Kgs.21 read the whole chapter

[10] And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

[13] And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.

2Kgs.19 read the whole chapter

[6] And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, Thus saith Yehovah, Be not afraid of the words which thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

[22] Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

Pss.74[10] O God, how long shall the adversary reproach? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever?

[18] Remember this, that the enemy hath reproached, O LORD, and that the foolish people have blasphemed thy name.

Isa.37[6] And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith Yehovah, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

[23] Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

Isa.52[5] Now therefore, what have I here, saith Yehovah, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith Yehovah; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

Isa.65[7] Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, saith Yehovah, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bosom.

Ezek.20[27] Therefore, son of man, speak unto the house of Israel, and say unto them, Thus saith the Lord Yehovah; Yet in this your fathers have blasphemed me, in that they have committed a trespass against me.

Mark.3[28] Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:[29] But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Luke.12[10] And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven.

[
2] For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
[
3] Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,
[
4] Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;
[
5] Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Tit.2[5] To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Jas.2[7] Do not they, (the rich) blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

Rev.13[6] And he (the beast) opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

Let’s look up the word, pollute which has the same meaning as profane

Isa.48[11] For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it: for how should my name be polluted? and I will not give my glory unto another.

Jer.7[30] For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith Yehovah: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it

Jer.34[16] But ye turned and polluted my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had set at liberty at their pleasure, to return, and brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids

Ezek.20 [39] As for you, O house of Israel, thus saith the Lord Yehovah; Go ye, serve ye every one his idols, and hereafter also, if ye will not hearken unto me: but pollute ye my holy name no more with your gifts, and with your idols.

Here is another vain thing not to do

Speaking in the name of Yehovah, when Yehovah did not send you, this is vain

Deut.18[22] When a prophet speaketh in the name of Yehovah, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which Yehovah hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

Neh.6[12] And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him

Jer.14[14] Then Yehovah said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

[15] Therefore thus saith Yehovah concerning the prophets that prophesy in my name, and I sent them not, yet they say, Sword and famine shall not be in this land; By sword and famine shall those prophets be consumed.

Jer.23[32] Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, saith Yehovah, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, saith Yehovah.

Jer.23[21] I have not sent these prophets, yet they ran: I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied.

Jer.27[15] For I have not sent them, saith Yehovah, yet they prophesy a lie in my name; that I might drive you out, and that ye might perish, ye, and the prophets that prophesy unto you.

Jer.28[15] Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; Yehovah hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie. [16] Therefore thus saith Yehovah; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against Yehovah.
[17] So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

Jer.29 [9] For they prophesy falsely unto you in my name: I have not sent them, saith Yehovah.

Ezek.13 [6] They have seen vanity and lying divination, saying, Yehovah saith: and Yehovah hath not sent them: and they have made others to hope that they would confirm the word.

Shabbat Shalom

Next week, Lord willing, the 2nd Commandment

Exod.20  [1] And God spake all these words, saying,

[
4] Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:[5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I Yehovah  thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;[6] And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
