Shabbat Shalom

שַׁבָּת שָׁלוֹם

Today we use the Gregorian calendar from Pope Gregory; from the 1500’s

Today is December 1, 2018 - in the 21 Century

 December -- the tenth month - now the 12 month

Middle English decembre
Old French decembre
Latin december "tenth month"
Latin decem "ten" + -ber (adj. suffix)

December had 30 days, until Numa when it had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long.

Yehovah has His own calendar:

We are now in the ninth month called Chislev day 22 כִסְלֵו

Zech.7 [1] And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of Yehovah came unto Zechariah in the fourth day of the ninth month, even in Chisleu;

This is news? All made up

After the Thanksgiving parades end and before the Christmas music starts blasting, it's time to celebrate Hanukkah.

The Jewish Festival of Lights begins on December 2 and ends on December 10 this year. So once you've got your blue, white, and silver decorations and menorah candles picked out, read up on the story of Hanukkah and get ready to chow down on latkes.  All made up, oh well…

I will soon explain this “made up” Hanukkah Festival, just not today. L

Today’s Topic:

Obeying the Words, the Voice of:

יְהֹוָה Yehovah {Yeh-ho-vah}

Adam and (Eve) חַוָּה Chavvah {khav-vah}

They Disobeyed

Gen.3 [8] And they heard the “voice of Yehovah God” walking in the garden in the cool of the day and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yehovah God amongst the trees of the garden.

Gen.26

[1] And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

[2] And Yehovah appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:[3] Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;

[4] And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed;[5] Because that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.

Exod.15 [26] And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of Yehovah thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am Yehovah that healeth thee.

Josh.22 [1] Then Joshua called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh,

[2] And said unto them, Ye have kept all that Moses the servant of Yehovah commanded you, and have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you:
[3] Ye have not left your brethren these many days unto this day, but have kept the charge of the commandment of Yehovah your God.
[4] And now Yehovah your God hath given rest unto your brethren, as he promised them: therefore now return ye, and get you unto your tents, and unto the land of your possession, which Moses the servant of Yehovah gave you on the other side Jordan.
[5] But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of Yehovah charged you, to love Yehovah your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

קוֹל יְהֹוָה

Pss.29

[1] Give unto Yehovah, O ye mighty, give unto Yehovah glory and strength.
[2] Give unto Yehovah the glory due unto his name; worship Yehovah in the beauty of holiness.

[3] The voice of Yehovah is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: Yehovah is upon many waters.
[4] The voice of Yehovah is powerful; the voice of Yehovah is full of majesty.
[5] The voice of Yehovah breaketh the cedars; yea, Yehovah breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
[6] He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
[7] The voice of Yehovah divideth the flames of fire.
[8] The voice of Yehovahshaketh the wilderness; Yehovah shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
[9] The voice of Yehovahmaketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.

[10] Yehovah sitteth upon the flood; yea, Yehovah sitteth King for ever.
[11] Yehovah will give strength unto his people; Yehovah will bless his people with peace.

Pss.12 [6] The words of Yehovah are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. [7] Thou shalt keep them, O Yehovah, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever

Pss.12 [1] Help, Yehovah; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.
[2] They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

[3] Yehovah shall cut off all flattering lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things:
[4] Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; our lips are our own: who is lord over us?
[5] For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith Yehovah; I will set him in safety from him that puffeth at him.

[8] The wicked walk on every side, when the vilest men are exalted.

Most people hate the Words, the Voice of Yehovah

Josh.5 [6] For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of Yehovah: unto whom Yehovah sware that he would not shew them the land, which Yehovah sware unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that floweth with milk and honey.

Jer.36 [1] And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from Yehovah, saying,
[2] Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel, and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day.
[3] It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.

[4] Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah: and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of Yehovah, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book.

[5] And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I cannot go into the house of Yehovah:
[6] Therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the words of Yehovah in the ears of the people in Yehovah's house upon the fasting day: and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities.

[7] It may be they will present their supplication before Yehovah, and will return every one from his evil way: for great is the anger and the fury that Yehovah hath pronounced against this people.
[8] And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, reading in the book the words of Yehovah in Yehovah's house.

[9] And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before Yehovah to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.

[10] Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of Yehovah, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of Yehovah's house, in the ears of all the people.

[11] When Michaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the book all the words of Yehovah,

[12] Then he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes.

[13] Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people.

[14] Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, unto Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them.

[15] And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.

[16] Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they were afraid both one and other, and said unto Baruch, We will surely tell the king of all these words.

[17] And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words at his mouth?

[18] Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.

[19] Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be.

[20] And they went in to the king into the court, but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe, and told all the words in the ears of the king.

[21] So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the roll: and he took it out of Elishama the scribe's chamber. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king.

[22] Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him.

[23] And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth.

[24] Yet they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words.

[25] Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them.

[26] But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son of Hammelech, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but Yehovah hid them.

[27] Then the word of Yehovah came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying,
[28] Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned.

[29] And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim the king of Judah, Thus saith Yehovah; Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast?

[30] Therefore thus saith Yehovah of Jehoiakim king of Judah; He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David: and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost.
[31] And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, all the evil that I have pronounced against them; but they hearkened not.

[32] Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added besides unto them many like words.

Jer.37 [1] And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah.

[2] But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of Yehovah, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.

[3] And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto Yehovah our God for us.

[4] Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.

[5] Then Pharoah's army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.

[6] Then came the word of Yehovah unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying,
[7] Thus saith Yehovah, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to inquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh's army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land.
[8] And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire.

[9] Thus saith Yehovah; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.

[10] For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.

[11] And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's army,
[12] Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.
[13] And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
[14] Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. But he hearkened not to him: so Irijah took Jeremiah, and brought him to the princes.
[15] Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison.

[16] When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;

[17] Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from Yehovah? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.

[18] Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison?

[19] Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land?

[20] Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.

[21] Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers' street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Jer.43[1] And it came to pass, that when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking unto all the people all the words of Yehovah their God, for which Yehovah their God had sent him to them, even all these words,

[2] Then spake Azariah the son of Hoshaiah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the proud men, saying unto Jeremiah, Thou speakest falsely: Yehovah our God hath not sent thee to say, Go not into Egypt to sojourn there:

[3] But Baruch the son of Neriah setteth thee on against us, for to deliver us into the hand of the Chaldeans, that they might put us to death, and carry us away captives into Babylon.
[4] So Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of Yehovah, to dwell in the land of Judah.

[5] But Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces, took all the remnant of Judah, that were returned from all nations, whither they had been driven, to dwell in the land of Judah;
[6] Even men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet, and Baruch the son of Neriah.
[7] So they came into the land of Egypt: for they obeyed not the voice of Yehovah: thus came they even to Tahpanhes.

[8] Then came the word of Yehovah unto Jeremiah in Tahpanhes, saying,
[9] Take great stones in thine hand, and hide them in the clay in the brickkiln, which is at the entry of Pharaoh's house in Tahpanhes, in the sight of the men of Judah;
[10] And say unto them, Thus saith Yehovah of hosts, the God of Israel;

Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them.

[11] And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword.

[12] And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
[13] He shall break also the images of Beth-shemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire.

Jerusalem was destroyed as Yehovah declared unto Jehoiakim, Zedekiah  by the mouth of Jeremiah

1Sam.15 [20] And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of Yehovah, and have gone the way which Yehovah sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites

[24] And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of Yehovah, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice

Amos.8 [11] Behold, the days come, saith the Lord Yehovah, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of: [12] And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of Yehovah, and shall not find it.

In closing: The basic story of the Bible in a nutshell

They refused to obey, neither were mindful of Thy wonders that Thou didst among them; but hardened their necks, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage:

but

thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and forsookest them not.

1Kgs.8 [56] Blessed be Yehovah, that hath given rest unto His people Israel, according to all that He promised: there hath not failed one word of all His good promise, which He promised by the hand of Moses His servant.

1Sam.15 [22] And Samuel said,

Hath Yehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yehovah?

Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

We will obey the voice of Yehovah our God, that it may be well with us, when we obey the voice of the Yehovah our God.
